How to prepare for SSDI hearing in Washington?

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application was denied in Washington and your reconsideration request was also unsuccessful, your next step is an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) hearing. This is your best chance to present your case fully and potentially get approved for benefits.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Understand the Hearing Process

During your SSDI hearing:

  • You will testify under oath about your medical conditions, symptoms, daily limitations, and work history
  • The judge will review your medical evidence and may ask clarifying questions
  • A Vocational Expert (VE) may be present to testify about jobs you can perform despite your limitations
  • Your attorney or representative can question you to strengthen your testimony and cross-examine the VE if needed

2. Review Your Entire SSA File

Before your hearing:

  • Request and review your full case file from SSA
  • Identify any missing or outdated medical records that need to be updated
  • Make notes on areas where your application was weak or unclear

3. Gather Updated Medical Evidence

Strong, recent medical documentation is critical to winning your hearing:

  • Obtain updated treatment notes, specialist reports, imaging results, and lab tests
  • Ask your doctor for a detailed medical source statement, including:
  • Diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Specific functional limitations (e.g. how long you can sit, stand, or lift)
  • How your symptoms affect your daily activities and work ability

Include documentation from all providers, such as specialists, therapists, and mental health professionals, to provide a complete view of your condition.

4. Prepare Your Personal Testimony

Practice explaining:

  • When your condition started and how it has progressed
  • Your daily struggles and why you cannot work
  • Specific symptoms and their impact on your ability to perform job tasks
  • Side effects of medications and how they affect your focus, stamina, or physical comfort

Use clear and specific examples, such as:

“I can only sit for 15 minutes before back pain forces me to stand or lie down. When I stand too long, my legs go numb, and I need to sit again.”

5. Meet With Your Representative

If you have an attorney or disability advocate:

  • Schedule time to review your testimony together
  • Participate in mock questioning sessions to build confidence
  • Discuss strategies for addressing any weaknesses in your case

6. Prepare Logistically for Your Hearing

On the day of your hearing:

  • Arrive 30 minutes early if in person
  • If your hearing is by phone or video:
  • Ensure your device is fully charged and functioning
  • Be in a quiet, private space without interruptions
  • Have your notes and medical documents organized for reference

7. Consider Bringing a Witness

If someone observes your daily challenges—such as a spouse, family member, or caregiver—ask your representative if their testimony would strengthen your case.
