What are the requirements to qualify for disability in Washington?

If you live in Washington and are unable to work due to a medical condition, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. While both programs are federally managed, understanding how they apply at the state level can help you successfully qualify for benefits.

Here’s a breakdown of the requirements you’ll need to meet in order to qualify for disability in Washington.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
Basic Requirements for SSDI
To qualify for SSDI, you must meet two main sets of criteria: medical and work-related.
1. Work History Requirements
- You must have paid into the Social Security system through payroll taxes (FICA).
- Most people need at least 20 work credits earned in the last 10 years. Younger applicants may qualify with fewer credits.
2. Medical Requirements
- You must have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that:
- Prevents you from working at a substantial level (known as Substantial Gainful Activity or SGA)
- Is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
- Your condition must be severe enough to limit basic work-related activities such as sitting, standing, remembering, or concentrating.
Basic Requirements for SSI
SSI is designed for those with limited income and resources, and does not require work history. To qualify for SSI:
- You must be disabled, blind, or age 65 or older
- You must meet the income and asset limits set by the SSA
- As of 2025, individuals must have less than $2,000 in resources ($3,000 for couples)
SSA's Five-Step Evaluation Process
The Social Security Administration uses a five-step process to evaluate every disability claim:
- Are you working? If you earn more than the monthly SGA limit, you may not be considered disabled.
- Is your condition severe? It must significantly limit your ability to perform basic work functions.
- Is your condition on the SSA’s list of impairments? If it is, and you meet the criteria, you may be automatically approved.
- Can you do your past work? SSA looks at whether your condition prevents you from performing jobs you’ve held in the last 15 years.
- Can you do any other work? If not, based on your age, education, and work history, you may qualify for benefits.
Additional Considerations in Washington
While the SSDI and SSI programs are federal, the Disability Determination Services (DDS) office in Washington processes your medical eligibility. They may request:
- Detailed medical records
- Statements from your doctors
- Independent evaluations arranged by SSA
The better your documentation, the more likely you are to receive a favorable decision.
