If you're unable to work due to a serious health condition and live in Washington, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). To qualify, your medical condition must meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability, and it must fall under certain categories recognized by the SSA.

SSA’s Listing of Impairments ("Blue Book")
The SSA maintains a detailed list of medical conditions known as the Listing of Impairments (commonly called the “Blue Book”). If your condition matches or equals the criteria listed, your claim may be approved more easily.
These impairments are grouped by body systems and include both physical and mental disorders.
Examples of Qualifying Conditions
Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Severe back problems (e.g., herniated discs, spinal stenosis)
- Joint dysfunction (e.g., hip or knee replacements)
- Amputations
- Chronic pain syndromes
Cardiovascular Conditions
- Congestive heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- Peripheral artery disease
Neurological Disorders
- Epilepsy
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Stroke (with lasting impairments)
- Traumatic brain injury
Mental Health Conditions
- Depression
- Bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Anxiety disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Autism spectrum disorders
Respiratory Disorders
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Asthma
- Cystic fibrosis
Immune System Disorders
- Lupus
- HIV/AIDS
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Cancer (Malignant Neoplastic Diseases)
- Breast cancer
- Leukemia
- Lung cancer
- Any cancer with metastasis or recurrence
Digestive and Genitourinary Disorders
- Crohn’s disease
- Liver disease
- Kidney failure requiring dialysis
This list is not exhaustive. Even if your specific diagnosis isn’t listed, you may still qualify if your condition prevents you from performing any substantial work.
What If Your Condition Isn’t Listed?
You may still be eligible for SSDI if:
- Your condition is severe, well-documented, and expected to last at least 12 months (or result in death)
- You can prove that it limits your ability to work, based on medical evidence and functional assessments
- Your condition is medically equivalent to one listed in the SSA’s Blue Book
